Student Resources
The Brandeis University Writing Program is committed to providing a thorough preparation for writing at the collegiate level. Through the University Writing Seminar (UWS), a first-year course required for graduation, students learn how to complicate arguments, better analyze texts, improve their paper's structure, and conduct and integrate research into a thesis-driven essay. Student-teacher conferences, in-class writing lessons, peer editing, and lively class discusion support students as they write the seminar's three required essays.
In addition to the UWS, which is offered in the fall and spring semesters of the first year, students are required to take two Writing Intensive (WI) classes, which build off the lessons of UWS to develop writing within the disciplines. Though WI classes differ from department to department, all incorporate extensive writing and revision into the course assignments. There are also many opportunities for student writing to have life beyond the classroom, whether through contests and awards at Brandeis or through on- and off-campus publication.
Please look around the website for information on Composition, UWS, and WI classes as well as faculty and instructor profiles. Check out the FAQ or email writing@brandeis.edu with any questions!
