* NOTE: The Writing Center has a new cancellation policy *

Unfortunately, due to the increasing number of last-minute cancellations and missed appointments, we are changing our cancellation policies for all appointments beginning Monday, February 13.

If you need to cancel your appointment, you must do so by 10pm the night before. For instance, if you have signed up for an appointment at any time on Wednesday, and you need to cancel it, you must do so by 10pm on Tuesday night. We expect any student who is still enrolled after 10pm, or who enrolls in an open slot after 10pm, to attend the appointment for which they signed up. If you miss your appointment (or if you try to cancel it after 10pm) for any reason, you will be restricted from further use of the online signup system, and will only be allowed to use the drop-in appointments. This applies to any appointments made after 10pm: if you see that the 3pm slot is open, and you sign up for it at 11am that same day, you may not change your mind and cancel the appointment.

We realize that emergencies may necessitate missing an appointment. If that occurs, a petition process exists to allow students to resume use of the signup system. However, documentation of the emergency will be required.

This change annuls our earlier cancellation policy. There will no longer be a 3-hour window for you to cancel your appointment, and you will not receive a warning the first time you miss an appointment. We regret having to make this change, but find we must do so in order to accommodate as many students as possible with our limited resources.

What We Do

The Writing Center offers free writing tutorial services to Brandeis University undergraduate and graduate students. Our staff of knowledgeable graduate student consultants can help you with papers, personal statements, short assignments, ESL issues, job applications and most of your writing needs. Consultation sessions are client-centered, relaxed and designed to address your specific writing project as well as your overall development as a writer.

We can help you brainstorm and focus topics, build stronger argument skills, use MLA citations correctly, and develop better drafting and editing strategies. In addition to one-on-one sessions with our consultants, the Writing Center also offers group workshops on various writing-related topics.

Although our staff can help you at every stage of the writing process, please keep in mind that we are not an editing service. Our sessions are designed to be a conversation about your project and your particular writing needs.

Consultations

At the Writing Center, we promote the idea that effective writing is a process, and we are happy to talk with you about your writing at all phases of that process, from initial brainstorming work to the final editing phase.

Consultants can act as valuable outside readers of student writing, working with writers in the midst of the process to suggest possibilities for revision. While consultants often work with writers on the level of the sentence, they are not editors of student papers.

Our consultations are client-centered, interactive and designed to address specific questions as well as writing issues in general.

Our Consultants

The Writing Center consultants are advanced graduate students from a variety of academic departments with demonstrated writing ability and teaching experience. Many students like to work with a particular consultant on an ongoing basis. We encourage students also to experience consultations with different staff members over the course of the academic year.

Please email comments or questions to Nat Hodes and Tina Van Kley, Writing Center directors, at writingcenter@brandeis.edu.
