A woman, identified as Ruth Porter Bernstein ’57, says, “I was on the first basketball team ever at Brandeis. And they didn’t have, by the way, Division 1, Division 2, and Division 3, so we played schools like BC. Jim says, “Coach Michael Coven sent me letters every day. When the time came to make a decision, it was a pretty easy choice.” Archival footage of the men’s soccer team is shown.
Mike says, “All the guys on the team were great guys. Most of them were seniors. We stayed friends throughout our lives.” Archival footage of the football team is shown. A team picture of the 1957 football team is shown.
Jim says, “My best friends in the world are my Brandeis soccer teammates. Brandeis is unique in part because of its youth. We’re celebrating the 75th anniversary of the university, the founding of the university. In higher education terms, we’re still a baby. So if you have a connection to Brandeis, you feel as though you have a connection to everyone else who has a connection with Brandeis.”

Ruth says, “My junior year, we were undefeated. We were good, what can I tell you?”

Ruth says, “I think they do a wonderful job with the athletics. They care about the kids, they care about their classes. If you look, you’ll see they’re really scholar athletes. Their marks are excellent. They're getting all types of fellowships. It stays with them the rest of their life.”
