About the Event

Coins stacked up with a pink frosted donut in frontDeeply rooted economic beliefs about constant economic growth radiate powerfully into all areas of life, dominating the mainstream narrative of acceptable cost externalization and obstructing realistic perspectives. Many of these beliefs are the root causes of the interconnected ecological and social crises of our time. Doughnut economics offers a compass to navigate the growing uncertainties of the polycrisis and to rewrite our basic economic assumptions. A set of principles offer guidelines to develop methodologies for building a regenerative, distributive and growth independent economic system that looks at the big picture and embraces complexity. A global movement puts the Doughnut into practice in various contexts: municipalities & politics, academia and education, organisations, businesses and civil society.

In this webinar you will learn about civil initiatives in Berlin, Hamburg, Munich and Frankfurt. The municipality of Bad Nauheim chose Doughnut Economics as their DNA for transformation into a sustainable and healthy city. Among other consultancies the Next Economy Lab develops concepts for towns and cities, businesses and unions embracing the Doughnut principles.  Dr. Nicole Hartmann presents the Donut framework, how it encourages and empowers communities of practice in Germany and invites to turn destructive narratives and actions into stories of hope, courage and building a livable future.

About the Speaker

Head shot of nicole looking at the cameraDr. Nicole Hartmann is an expert in past and current discourse and communication strategies. She started as a researcher and assistant professor in greco-roman history and turned her gaze towards the future in 2019, embarking full scale on climate activism. Since then she initiates and works for projects and campaigns that address the biggest challenges for our civilization: to stop Greenhouse Gas emissions and the loss of biodiversity while securing social justice and stable democracies. In 2021 she co-coordinated the first German Citizen Assembly on Climate. As co-founder and strategist of Donut Berlin, a local hub of the global Doughnut Economics movement (DEAL) she aims to provide environments of innovative civil engagement and transformative action for a social and ecological just society. Her work is informed by systems thinking and the concepts of multisolving and deep collaboration. She aims to create tangible practices that open up pathways to a connected and more than cognitive understanding of the polycrisis and to envision a livable future. She empowers people to help change our current destructive trajectory.
