Jennifer DeLeon will read from her work. Part of Creative Writing Series.
Jennifer De Leon is author of the YA novel Don’t Ask Me Where I’m From (Simon & Schuster) which was chosen as a Junior Library Guild selection, and the essay collection White Space: Essays on Culture, Race, & Writing (UMass Press), which is a recipient of the Juniper Prize in Creative Nonfiction. She is also the editor of Wise Latinas: Writers on Higher Education (University of Nebraska Press), an anthology that won an International Latino Book Award. An Assistant Professor of Creative Writing at Framingham State University and faculty member in the MFA in Program at Bay Path University, she has published prose in over a dozen literary journals including Ploughshares, Iowa Review, Michigan Quarterly Review, and more. Jenn makes her home outside the Boston area with her husband and two sons. Her next YA novel, Borderless, is forthcoming in August, 2022. Also on the way are two children’s picture books—So Many Gifts, and a biography of Nobel Peace Prize winner, Rigoberta Menchú. Poet Rajiv Mohabir is the author of two books of poetry and four chapbooks, including Thunder in the Courtyard: Kajari Poems and the Ghostbird Press inaugural chapbook prize winning Acoustic Trauma. Mohabir has received numerous other awards including the 2014 Intro Prize in Poetry by Four Way Books for his book The Taxidermist's Cut, a Voices of Our Nation's Artists Foundation Fellowship, and the New Immigrant Writing Award from Restless Books for his memoir Antiman. He is currently a professor for the BFA/MFA program in the Writing, Literature, and Publishing department at Emerson University and the Translations Editor at Waxwing Journal.
Following his poetry reading, Mohabir will be in conversation with Brandeis University's Professor Faith Smith (AAAS and English).

We'll be discussing the relation between Indigenous sovereignty and climate justice, Water Protectors, and resistance to fossil fuel infrastructure.

Join this open session of Prof. Tom King's ENG 113b, Performing Climate Justice, with Peter C. Frumhoff, Richman Distinguished Fellow in Public Life. We'll be discussing a just transition framework and the role of creativity and the arts in facilitating a just transition from fossil fuels and racialized, extractive capitalism. Peter C. Frumhoff served through 2021 as the longtime chief climate scientist and director of science and policy at the Union of Concerned Scientists. At UCS, he led strategies and initiatives to bring robust scientific expertise to bear on informing public understanding and motivating public policies; guided science, equity and innovation post-doctoral fellowships and served as senior liaison with the scientific community, policymakers and the media.

Poet Joan Naviyuk Kane is Inupiaq with family from Ugiuvak and Qawiaraq. The author of eight collections of poetry and prose, she is a lecturer in the department of studies in Race, Colonialism and Diaspora at Tufts, and teaches creative writing at Harvard, Tufts, and the Institute of American Indian Arts. She raises her sons in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
Kane will read from her work. PhD students Jenny Factor and Nai Kim will lead the discussion, during which attendees are encouraged to ask questions. This is part of the Brandeis Creative Writing Reading Series.
