Sonia Jurado is the inaugural director of the Office of Equal Opportunity. In this role, she also serves as the Title IX and ADA/504 coordinator and is responsible for ensuring the university’s compliance with Title VI, Title VII, Title IX, ADA, Rehabilitation Act Section 504 and other state and federal laws relating to bias, discrimination, harassment, sexual misconduct, dating/domestic violence and stalking.
Prior to coming to Brandeis, Sonia served as the Title IX and ADA/Section 504 coordinator for Wellesley College. Before that Sonia served in that same role at Mount Ida College in Newton, Massachusetts. Sonia also worked as a Title IX investigator for Tufts University. In each of those positions, Sonia conducted investigations, revised and developed policies and conducted training for faculty, staff and students on issues of discrimination, harassment and sexual misconduct.
Sonia and her team conduct investigations into all allegations of discrimination, harassment and sexual misconduct brought forward by faculty, staff, and students and are responsible for reviewing and developing university policy regarding these issues. Sonia also leads training efforts for faculty, staff, and students regarding discrimination, harassment and sexual misconduct.
Prior to moving into higher education, Sonia was a practicing employment attorney working as corporate employment counsel for Liberty Mutual in Boston and in private practice at a law firm in Chicago.
Sonia completed her undergraduate degree at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and received her law degree from Loyola University Chicago School of Law.
