Can we design our way to a greener climate?

Hoseob Yoon, a South Korean graphic artist who has devoted his career and his life to protecting the environment, served as the Center’s fourth Distinguished Visiting Practitioner. His residency included class visits, art demonstrations, exhibits, and one-on-one visits with students and members of the community. Yoon shared his message about the risk of climate change and the threats it poses to agriculture, water supplies, health, and biodiversity.

Hoseob Yoon is a graduate of the Seoul National University College of Fine Art. He has worked as an Art Director for Oricom Seoul and as a Creative Director for Daewoo. From 1982 to 2008 he was a professor in the Department of Visual Communication Design in the Kookmin University College of Design, and since 2008 has been an honor professor at Kookmin University. Among other accomplishments, he served as a board member of the 1988 Seoul Olympics Design Committee, and was the designer of the official poster and emblem of the 17th World Scout Jamboree (1991). He has exhibited in South Korea, Japan, and Thailand.

Keynote Address: "The Green Canvas: The Artist as Environmental Activist."

KSA Hangout – An informal conversation with Yoon hosted by the Korean Student Association. 

Wednesday, February 10 (Wednesday's events were cancelled due to weather-related close of University)

"A Day in the Life of an Environmental Artist" – Are you an artist who seeks to engage with climate change or other pressing social issues? Are you an activist committed to making a difference? Listen to Professor Yoon tell stories about the choices that he made, the people who influenced him, and his day-to-day life committed to Earth's environment. 

"Office Hours with Professor Yoon" – One-on-one time with Hoseob Yoon.

Thursday, February 11

Designing a Greener Future – Brandeis community members work with Professor Hoseob Yoon to collaborate on the design and painting of T-shirts with artful messages that will help preserve the planet. Hosted by Students for Environment Action (SEA).

Yoon's residency was sponsored by the Ethics Center and the Program in Sustainable International Development in the Heller School with lead faculty member Eric Olson. It was part of a year of activities designed to raise awareness on the Brandeis campus about climate change and the choices we all make in relation to the Earth's environment, now and in the future.
