Director of Ethics Center awarded Fulbright Scholarship

June 21, 2016

The International Center for Ethics, Justice and Public Life is pleased to announce that Daniel Terris, Director of the Ethics Center, has been awarded a Fulbright Scholarship. Dr. Terris will be based in Jerusalem as a U.S. Fulbright Scholar from August 2016 through June 2017.

He will be teaching in and working on the development of the Masters program in American Studies at Al-Quds University, a Palestinian institution on the West Bank. Dr. Cynthia Cohen will serve as acting director of the Center during this time.

The American Studies Program at Al-Quds University (AQU) was founded in 2003. After the retirement of the program’s founding director in 2015, the president of Al-Quds University asked Terris to work with AQU faculty to expand the program’s curriculum, involve more U.S. faculty, and better serve the needs of the Palestinian professional community.

Last year Terris began work on this project in collaboration with AQU and Brandeis University colleagues. During his Fulbright year in Jerusalem and the West Bank, Terris will play a key role in establishing the revived program on a sound footing at AQU, and will teach in the program as well.

“American Studies at Al-Quds University has always served as an important symbolic bridge between the Palestinian and American communities,” says Terris. “Its curriculum and programming also provide a space where young Palestinians can consider concepts of democratic practice, leadership, entrepreneurship, civic activism, and public policy. The program is a crucial building block towards the development of a robust Palestinian civil society.”
