Profile

A.J. Murphy is scholar of American military history, the history of capitalism, and the history of gender and sexuality. Their current book project - Pentagon Capitalism: Management Expertise in the Cold War U.S. Military - recounts how defense leaders reorganized the U.S. military on the model of the private, for-profit firm. Murphy’s research has been supported by the U.S. Army Center of Military History, the U.S. Army Heritage and Education Center, the Hagley Museum and Library, Harvard Business School, the Hoover Institution, the Jefferson Scholars Foundation, the Joint Center for History and Economics at Harvard, and the Lyndon B. Johnson Foundation.
