Expertise
geometric group theory, topologyProfile
Ruth Charney is the Theordore and Evelyn G. Berenson Professor of Mathematics. Her expertise is in the fields of Geometric Group Theory and Topology. In geometric group theory, one studies groups of symmetries of geometric objects, using the geometry to better understand the algebraic structure of these groups. Charney's work focuses on the geometry of metric spaces of non-positive curvature and their symmetry groups. She enjoys giving lectures that give insight into the beauty of abstract mathematics to the general public. In addition, she is involved in a variety of activities designed to support women and other under-represented groups in mathematics, She served as President of the Association for Women in Mathematics (AWM) from 2013-15, and she is currently serving as President of the American Mathematical Society (AMS), the largest professional society in the field. She is also a Fellow of both the AMS and the AWM. WebpageCourses Taught
