Profile

Sara Hascal is the acting director of the Hebrew program at Brandeis Univ. She is teaching at Brandeis since 1985 Where she teaches Hebrew language skills, creative reading and writing courses and Israeli theater for performance. She developed Hebrew courses which treat the subject matter through the traditions, history, politics, arts and cultural aspects of Israel. Her publications and presentations include topics such as integrating language skills and culture through content-based instruction, reading and writing strategies and integrating Hebrew Literature curriculum and literacy for family educators in Jewish institutions. Along with her colleagues, Hascal published “Brandeis Modern Hebrew,” which has become the standard college Hebrew textbook in the United States. Sara is involved in advising students, training new Hebrew faculty, and involved in departmental duties at Brandeis. She is a doctoral candidate in modern languages at Middlebury College. Her current research focuses on the effect of using drama as a pedagogy tool in a second language classroom.
