What We Do
The Gender and Sexuality Center hosts programs and events every year towards building a diverse and inclusive Brandeis.
Where We Work
The Gender and Sexuality Center at Brandeis University serves faculty, staff, and students in the School of Arts and Sciences, the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, the International Business School, and the Heller School for Public Policy and Management.
The Gender and Sexuality Center believes in the power of education. We offer professional development training for faculty and staff on building gender-inclusive classrooms and campus communities.
Doing Better at Brandeis is a partnership between Student Accessibility Support (SAS); the Prevention, Advocacy, and Resource Center (PARC); the Office of Equal Opportunity (OEO); and the Gender and Sexuality Center (GSC).
“Building Gender-Inclusive Classrooms and Campus Communities”
Faculty and staff will learn good practice recommendations for creating a more inclusive and equitable learning experiences for trans and gender-nonconforming students. Participants will first learn practical, theoretical, and historical information on the proper use of gender identity terms including personal pronouns. Participants will then learn why pronouns matter, how to ask and use pronouns, and what to do after making a mistake. This in-depth workshop combines presentation instruction and small group processing.

The Gender and Sexuality Center celebrates the academic achievements of LGBTQ+ students. The first Lavender Graduation was hosted in 1995 by Dr. Ronni Sanlo, a Jewish lesbian, who was denied the opportunity to attend her child’s graduation due to her sexual orientation.
Since 2012, the Gender and Sexuality Center celebrates the academic achievements of LGBTQ+ students and their contributions to university life. Lavender is important to LGBTQ history. It is a combination of the pink triangle that gay men were forced to wear in concentration camps and the black triangle designating lesbians as political prisoners in Nazi Germany. The LGBTQ civil rights movement took these symbols of hatred and combined them to make symbols and color of pride and community. Source: Human Rights Campaign
