Brandeis International Business School

Shifali Nalawade, MSF’25: Small classes, supportive community, global perspective. ‘This is the place for you’

MSF Aaron SamWhy did you choose Brandeis International Business School?

I chose Brandeis International Business School because of its reputation for academic rigor, focus on global finance and strong emphasis on real-world applications. The tailored Master of Science in Finance (MSF) curriculum, renowned faculty and proximity to Boston’s financial hub provided an ideal environment to gain both theoretical knowledge and practical experience.

The International Business School’s close-knit and diverse community also offered a unique opportunity to collaborate with peers from around the world, enriching my understanding of global markets and cultures.

What were the highlights of your time at Brandeis?

One of the most meaningful experiences was my work with the India Initiative, where I collaborated on events and projects that celebrated India’s culture and addressed critical issues affecting the Indian diaspora.

Participating in the Industry Trek to New York City was another standout moment. It provided incredible exposure to the finance industry, allowing me to network with professionals at top firms and gain insights into the fast-paced world of global finance.

The community at the International Business School is inclusive, collaborative and incredibly supportive. As the school’s Diversity Equity and Inclusion Fellow, I had the privilege of contributing to this environment by organizing events and initiatives that celebrated diversity and promoted inclusion. From planning cultural heritage months to facilitating discussions on important topics like identity and representation, my work aimed to ensure that every student felt seen and valued.

How would you describe the MSF program?

What sets the MSF program apart is its global perspective, which is integrated into every aspect of learning — from the coursework to discussions with professors and peers from diverse backgrounds.

The program also offers exceptional opportunities to connect with industry professionals through events like Industry Treks and networking sessions, as well as access to cutting-edge tools like the Bloomberg Business and Economics Lab and financial databases.

Overall, the MSF program equips students with the skills, insights and confidence to excel in the dynamic and competitive field of finance.

What should prospective students know about the business school?

Prospective students should know that Brandeis International Business School is more than just an academic institution — it’s a community where you’ll be challenged, supported and inspired to grow. The small class sizes mean you’ll get to know your professors personally, and their mentorship has been instrumental in shaping my academic and professional journey.

My time at Brandeis equipped me with the technical expertise, global perspective and professional skills necessary to succeed in the dynamic field of finance. The business school’s emphasis on experiential learning — through field projects, case competitions and Industry Treks — helped me connect classroom concepts to real-world applications. And as someone deeply involved in the community, from being a DEI Fellow to participating in various student clubs, I can confidently say that the opportunities for leadership, collaboration and personal growth are unparalleled.

Brandeis also stands out for its welcoming and diverse environment. You’ll meet people from all over the world who will broaden your perspective and challenge you to think globally. If you’re ready to work hard, embrace new experiences and be part of a vibrant and inclusive community, this is the place for you.
