IBS celebrates Diwali 2010

October 16, 2010

The entire Brandeis International Business School community joined together to celebrate Diwali, a popular South Asian holiday that literally translates into "festival of lights."

Festive decorations and bright smiles lit up the World Court for the event, which featured live music, authentic Indian delicacies, Henna painting and rangoli (decorations using colored powders). Staff, faculty and students were invited to participate in the event by donning the traditional Indian "sari" attire and joining in the Indian dance performance.

The South Asian students also honored the more somber parts of the holiday, creating a makeshift altar in the Court to perform religious rituals of worship. According to Hindu mythology, Diwali signifies the homecoming of Rama, the Hindu God, after his 14-year exile in the jungle and his victory over the demon Ravana.
