Email Protection (Spam Filtering)
ITS is adding an additional layer of security to Brandeis staff, faculty, and student email accounts. Email protection provides enhanced email security to further protect your Brandeis email account from spam, viruses, malware, and phishing scams. As part of enhanced email protection, you can also choose to manage bulk mail from marketing sites or vendors.EMAIL DIGEST WEB DIGEST
The problem of spam and unwanted emails are becoming more like an epidemic every day. ITS is providing the campus community with a spam filtering solution for your brandeis.edu email account. Our email protection tool works completely behind the scenes so there is no software to download and install on your computer. We offer you a host of options to remove the annoying parts of email, all while keeping your accounts and data safe and secure.
Spam & Bulk Email Filtering
The email filtering system will automatically determine if an email is spam (e.g., marketing, cold sales, etc.) and/or bulk (e.g., newsletters, other mass mailings, etc.) and will quarantine the message(s).
Around 8:00 AM ET each day, you will receive a digest of emails filtered by the email protection system. In this digest, you can see the subject and sender of each message and then take an action on each message. From the digest you can release messages, allow or block senders, read quarantined email on the web, or request a new digest.
While spam filtering is accurate, no automated system is perfect. We all receive a large amount of email, and there will be times when a desired or legitimate email message is marked as spam. We recommend that you review your quarantined messages periodically, either in your Daily Email Digest or by logging on to your Web Digest. Every time you release a message from your quarantine, it is automatically reported so that the systems that filter these emails can be improved.
Making sure you get the emails you need is important to us. Email protection helps us achieve that while also keeping both you and Brandeis safe.
Gives you control over what reaches your mailbox with several spam filtering options and the ability to create your own blocked and safe senders lists. We're putting the power right in your hands.
You'll get daily notification emails showing you messages that have been flagged as spam, as well as options to block or allow senders, or specific emails. We make it easy for you to get the information you need.
Allows you access to a web portal to view quarantined messages, manage sender lists, and manage account settings.
How to enroll
Effective Jan. 21, 2021, Proofpoint was enabled for all faculty and staff. By default, you will receive a daily email digest around 8:00 a.m. if any messages were flagged by spam filtering; and/or bulk filtering if enabled. Students, optionally, can enroll in email protection by visiting the email protection enrollment page.
How to use email protection
The easiest way to use email protection is via the email digest you receive in your inbox. The digest will contain a few options:
- Release - select to release the selected message for immediate delivery to your mailbox and automatically report that the message was not spam.
- Release and Allow Sender* - select to release the selected message to your mailbox, add the sender to your Allow List, and automatically report that the message was not spam.
- Allow Sender - select to add the sender to your Allow List, and automatically report that the message was not spam. This does not take any action on the current message, but future messages will be delivered to your mailbox.
- Block Sender - select to block future messages from the sender.
If you would prefer to use the web portal to review your quarantined messages, you can visit your web digest. Using the web digest, you can manage your safe and blocked sender list, enroll in bulk filtering, and modify other settings. For more information, please review the web digest documentation.
*Note, the "release and allow sender" option is only available for the Spam section of the email digest, and it will not appear for bulk mail. Only users who have opted to filter bulk mail will see that section in their digest.
