Changes to Kanopy Streaming Service

Brandeis Library will transition to a mediated access model for Kanopy on June 3, 2019. This change comes as a result of the increasing cost of the service, which has more than doubled over the past year and is no longer sustainable.

We recognize that streaming media is an important instructional resource and we will still provide access to videos on Kanopy. Under the mediated access model that will begin on June 3, you’ll only see the video titles in our Library catalog that we are currently licensing. If you have a specific title in mind that does not appear in the Library catalog, you can search in Kanopy directly (https://brandeis.kanopy.com/) and complete the request form. The completed form comes to Acquisitions staff in the Library who will evaluate each request for licensing. The highest priority will be given to videos that are being used in course work. Once a video is licensed, it will be available for 12 months. Access to those videos of ongoing interest can be extended. For more information on requesting Kanopy videos, please visit our Kanopy FAQ page (https://guides.library.brandeis.edu/kanopy).

Kanopy's pricing model for libraries is based on number of views per-title. Once a title has been viewed three times, Brandeis Library is charged an annual licensing fee of $135 per title. Over the last year, we have seen our costs for Kanopy increase significantly over previous years. With increasing costs of resources across the board, the Library could not continue to absorb the cost for the current level of Kanopy access.
