Martin Boykan, Faculty, of New York City, on March 6. A renowned composer, teacher and performer who served for a year as a pianist for the Boston Symphony, he was the Irving G. Fine Professor of Music Emeritus at Brandeis, where he taught from 1957-2009; founder of the Brandeis Chamber Ensemble; and an inspirational mentor to countless music students. Survived by wife Susan Schwalb.

David G. Gil, Faculty, of Lexington, Massachusetts, on March 6. Professor of social policy and director of the Center for Social Change at the Heller School, where he taught from 1964-2010, he drew on his experience as a Holocaust survivor who escaped Nazi-occupied Vienna for his research and writing, which focused on systemic causes of violence, and overcoming social and economic injustice. Survived by two sons and two grandchildren.

Andreas Teuber, Faculty, of Arlington, Massachusetts, on Feb. 15. An associate professor of philosophy at Brandeis who served as department chair from 2005-11, and whose dedication to teaching and mentoring over more than 35 years endeared him to students, he was also an actor, appearing alongside Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor, and served as founding artistic director of the Cambridge Theater Company. Survived by a brother.
