Jewish Education Research Lab
Our research explores how children comprehend texts. Using the Hebrew Bible as a case study, we investigate what children do when they read and discuss the text, how they talk about it with their teachers and classmates, and what interpretations they offer. The Hebrew Bible has been studied across millennia in almost every context imaginable. Therefore, it offers unique opportunities to explore how people, starting from a young age, read closely. Our research generates insights not only for educators who teach Hebrew Bible, but also for the broader community of literacy educators.
We welcome inquiries from any Brandeis undergraduate or graduate student who is interested in research, Hebrew Bible and/or religious education. We review applicants annually for the academic year.
Interested students should send a CV and letter of interest to Dr. Ziva Hassenfeld.
