Jonathan DecterEdmond J. Safra Professor of Sephardic Studies



Jonathan Decter is the Edmond J. Safra Professor of Sephardic studies at Brandeis University. His research focuses on Jewish literature in the Islamic World during the medieval period, and in Sephardic Studies more generally. Professor Decter's most recent course offerings include Jews in the World of Islam; Introduction to Judaism, Christianity, and Islam; and Judeo-Arabic literature.

Selected Publications

Professor Decter is the author of Iberian Jewish Literature: Between al-Andalus and Christian Europe, which in 2007 was awarded the Salo W. Baron prize for best first book in Jewish Studies. He is also the co-editor, with Michael Rand, of Studies in Arabic and Hebrew Letters in Honor of Raymond P. Scheindlin. In addition, he publishes extensively on medieval Hebrew and Arabic literature, and Jewish Thought in academic journals and monographs.
