Welcome Class of 2023

This video includes different moving images of Move In Day at Brandeis that includes GoPro footage as well as previously recorded footage taken from two incoming students on their mobile devices. The incoming students who participated in providing footage were Kyla Giffin '23 and Mohammed (MJ) Ibrahim & '23.

The video starts with a split screen including footage that a MJ recorded showing his ecstatic reaction to getting accepted to Brandeis as well as opaque footage of students on the Great Lawn during orientation.

The screen changes to a split screen of a student packing her luggage as well as Kyla’s footage in black and white of her closing her bedroom door from home before she heads to her flight. On screen text reads: “This is it.” You can hear Kyla saying these words off camera. Modern pop music fades in and continues to play throughout the video.

The screen is pushed away by a dark blue solid and a lens flare. On screen text moves in reading: “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” – Lao Tzu

The quote is split in to two parts. The second part of the quote (begins with a single step.) is featured on a white background.

A white fade transitions to a split screen of the student footage on their journey to Brandeis. The left side of the screen shows a highway sign that leads to Orlando Airport. The right side of the screen shows a student getting on an escalator.

The next shot is a close up of a traveler rolling a yellow suitcase through the airport. Another split screen appears using student footage. On the left the tarmac of the airport is visible outside of an airplane window before it takes off. The sky is blue and it appears to be midday. On the right the shot is also from the airplane window taking off on the tarmac but the sky suggests it is dawn.

A white flash transitions to a wider shot from ground level of an airplane taking off above. Another split screen appears using student footage. On the left there are clouds in the sky and part of the airplane is visible. On the right the plane has landed with grass in the background and part of the plane visible. These shots were both taken inside of the airplane through the window.

A wider shot of a traveler walking with a yellow suitcase through the airport is visible on screen. A split screen appears. On the left is a timelapse of the Boston waterfront. On the right is from student footage showcasing a sign reading: “Welcome to Boston”.

The next shot is a close up of sunglasses and part of a train window. The reflection in the sunglasses and changing landscape outside of the window indicates the train is moving. There is a quick shot of students on the Brandeis campus. The footage is reversed and it appears the students are walking backwards. The screen fades to black.

A close up shot of MJ turning the key to his dorm is followed by the door slowly closing. His name has been written on an a piece of paper that looks like a basketball on the door to welcome him.

In slightly slow motion and from inside the room MJ opens the door. A close up shot in fast motion shows him setting up various office items on his desk. Different square shapes come together to create one shot of students on the Great Lawn during Orientation. This transition of square shapes coming together continues throughout the video (square transition).

MJ and Kyla create a selfie video using a GoPro on the back of a golf cart. Their laughter is heard in the background.

A square transition brings the screen to a black and white shot of students on campus during orientation waving and pointing at the camera. A colorful shots of students laughing is scene followed by the rest of the black and white shot.

A group of students walking on campus during Orientation appears followed by three students waving to the camera. After a square transition three students walk up the hill on campus which cuts to the end of a previous shot of students walking on campus.

The screen is pushed away by a dark blue solid and a lens flare. On screen text moves in reading: “You are now a Brandeisian.”

A square transition shows a student hugging goodbye to their parents. A group shot of students during Orientation appears as they sit and listen on The Great Lawn.

A square transition cuts to a family saying goodbye to their new Brandeisian.

Two quick cuts of different students sitting on The Great Lawn appear on screen followed by MJ and Kyla hanging out in a dorm room.

A square transition shows MJ giving the thumbs up and laughing followed by a close up Go Pro shot of Kyla riding in the golf cart.

A square transition leads us to a student dancing in front of the university pond followed by more students walking and laughing on campus during Orientation.

Three students make a combined high-five in front of the SCC followed by a group of students in front of the pond laughing.

One of the students who made the previous high-five says “Woo!”. More students walk past the camera closer to the dorms with flowers in the foreground.

A square transition leads us to quick close up shots of students on The Great Lawn during Orientation sitting and listening.

MJ runs on campus towards his dorm. A square transition leads us to a group of students walking under an arch of balloons outside of the SCC. A parent on his phone walks into the balloon arch, looks around and laughs.

Two quick shots of students waving goodbye to the camera fade in.

A white fade brings us to an animated graphic design of different boxes. Each box is either a solid blue shade or snippets of moving footage from Orientation. The Brandeis seal is centered on this design and the top left reads: “Welcome to the Class of 2023”.

The screen transitions to white bringing us to the Brandeis logo “Brandeis University”. The screen fades to Go Pro footage of Kyla and MJ riding on the back of the golf cart. They wave to a friend on campus and laugh in the background.

The screen fades to black reading: “Special thanks to: Kyla Giffin ’23 and Mohammed (MJ) Ibrahim ’23 – Produced by Tarah Llewellyn – Office of Communications and External Relations”. The video fades to black and the music fades out bringing the video to an end.
