The Bacchae

Transcript

There are open captions throughout this video in white text at the bottom of the screen. The video starts with a student, Dan Souza - an actor in the play beat boxing on-screen in Spingold theatre. He is not paying attention to the camera and is beatboxing.

On-screen horizontal text appears and reads: “Brandeis."

Next, vertical text moves on to the screen. By using the “e” in Brandeis the on-screen text now reads: “Brandeis gets."

The letters in “Brandeis” transform into the word “creative."

On-screen text appears “the Bacchae – Euripides."

Upbeat music fades in. A series of quick shots that vary between close and wide angles of students performing in the Bacchae performance play to the beat of the music. Rosemarie Archer, a student and lead performer, speaks on-camera. Along with the open captions, the on-screen text identifies her – “Rosemarie Archer."

Rosemarie: “In the show I’m playing Dionysus with Dan Souza.”

There is another quick montage of students performing on and off stage.

Rosemarie: “I really loved acting from a young age.”

More shots of rehearsal performances and on-stage acting are seen.

Dan Souza shares the lead with Rosemarie. He begins to speak off-camera while another quick montage of student performers acting in the Bacchae play in the forefront.

Dan: “I was looking for a school specifically that would give me the opportunity to act in college.”

Along with the open captions, the on-screen text identifies him – “Dan Souza." There is another quick montage of students performing on and off stage.

Rosemarie: “But I came into Brandeis saying I’m going to be a computer scientist.”

This is followed by another quick montage of students performing on and off stage.

Rosemarie: “Here at Brandeis you can be a theater major,” [speaking on-screen] “You can be a global studies major,”

[speaking off-camera as a new montage of the play begins] “ … you can be a business major.”

Rosemarie: “It makes for smart artists.”

Rosemarie speaks off-screen: “Theater without boundaries.”

The screen fades to white. The on-screen text reads: “Brandeis.edu." The screen fades to very brief shot of Dan onstage being goofy. The screen fades to black. Music from the Bacchae play fades in.

The on-screen text reads:

The screen fades to the last shot of the entire crew at their final dress rehearsal giving a bow.

The director speaks in the background: “Yeah. I think that’s the one. Nice, guys.”

The music and the video fade to black bringing the video to an end.
