On-screen: HISP 32A: Intermediate Conversation, Department of Romance Studies, Brandeis University with image of 4 silhouettes of people facing each other and making gestures as if they are talking with circles above them depicting objects such as clocks, apple globe, etc.

Prof. Kristen Turpin appears on the screen.

Voice-over: Hi, my name is Kristen Turpin, and on behalf of all my colleagues here at Brandeis who teach Hisp 32A, I’m here to tell you about our Intermediate Spanish Conversation course.

Original image reappears.

Voice-over: In this video, I’ll briefly introduce the course and answer the questions that students typically have.

New slide: HISP 32A, what will I do in this course? Professor Turpin appears in window next to the question.

Voice over: The first question is What will I do in that course? Well, Hisp 32A is an intermediate conversation course that will develop your language skills in an intellectually engaging environment. That means that by the end of the semester, you will achieve intermediate-low to intermediate-mid speaking proficiency, In other words by the end of the semester, you will be able to survive in real-world situations that require you to speak only in Spanish: such as study abroad, engaging volunteer work, traveling, speaking with your Waltham neighbors, etc.

Prof. Kristen Turpin appears on full screen.

Voiceover: Although the Hisp 32A broaches topics that you may have seen superficially in other Spanish courses, we’ve intentionally designed the curriculum so that each unit gives you opportunities to expand your abilities.   Whether you are coming from Hisp 20 at Brandeis or from a high-school language course, you'll find plenty of opportunities to take risks, make mistakes, and grow the limits of your Spanish speaking abilities.

New slide: little images of diverse people are in upper left of screen, window with Prof. Turpin on right.

Voiceover: A little bit more concretely, it means that in the first unit, we take a deep dive into our personalities. Who am I?  What experiences and people have shaped my personality? In this first unit you’ll learn to talk about yourself with nuance and precision and talk about key moments in your life.   The second unit is about traveling.

New image of travel items, such as sunglasses, camera, high-tops, compasses, had, etc. appears below people images.

Voiceover:  Instead of just talking about the activities we like to do while traveling, in this unit we look at how issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion   affect not only who can travel but also how tourism impacts local, often marginalized communities. In this unit, you'll learn to give advice to other travelers.

New image appears below the travel items of a simple painting of a boat filled with many people on the deck.

Voiceover: The final unit broaches the topic of immigration. Why do people migrate? What challenges do they face, and how are immigrants received in their new communities?   In this third unit you’ll learn to express opinions and cite evidence to support them.

In all 3 of these units, you will demonstrate what you’ve learned in assessment tasks that ask you to use Spanish in real-world situations, so instead of completing matching activities, to show your knowledge of vocabulary or filling in the blanks   for verb conjugations, in this course your assessment tasks will involve interviewing for a job, participating in debates, writing emails, or booking a trip. There will be real-world  situations where you can apply what you've learned.

New slide: HISP 32A, how do I know if this course is right for me? Appears on screen with Prof. Turpin in window on right side of screen.

Voiceover: So, how do I know if this course is right for me?

Chart of HISP courses and progression: HISP 32A: Intermediate Spanish Conversation. HISP 10 to HISP 20 to HISP 30 = Language Requirement. HISP 104 and HISP 105 =Bridge Courses HISP 106 and 108 both are considered beginning of major or minor and lead to other Upper Level courses. Placement coordinated by the Director of the Spanish Language Program, Elena González Ros, (elenag@brandeis.edu).

Voiceover: Hisp 32 fulfills the language requirement of the Brandeis Core. To be placed in this course, you’ll work with Professor Elena González Ros, Director of the Spanish Language Program. She will help you to figure out if Hisp 32 is the right level for you. If you took Hisp 20, this course, Hisp 32, is the next course in the language sequence, and it will be a good fit for you.   If you took Spanish in high school or at another institution, we use a placement test that we have here at Brandeis or your AP test score to estimate your level and place you in the correct course. Please remember that many students who have never taken Spanish at Brandeis start in Hisp 32 and have great success in the course.

Image changes to Prof. Turpin on full screen.

To conclude, the Director of the Spanish Language Program will be able to best advise you about how to select the right level of course at Brandeis.
