Ava Faria Internship

Descriptive Transcript

The video starts with a group of adolescents sitting around picnic tables.

The adolescents are participating in arts and crafts.

Several close up shots of the adolescents flash through the screen.

A young woman is being interviewed, she says, “I decided to take this internship because it gave me a connection back home and it gave me an opportunity to give back to the school. My name is Ava Faria, I'm entering my third year at Brandeis. I'm studying health: science, society and policy and I also have a minor in African and African American Studies."

A title screen appears over a blurred background of Ava Faria and a young adolescent looking at foliage. The title screen reads, "Ava Faria: Back to School."

Footage is shown of Ava Faria helping the adolescent school girls with their arts and crafts while you can hear her voice saying, “I was given a grant to come back to our sister school, which is my alma mater, and I've just been interning here, working directly with the students. And I was shadowing in classes in their advisory groups, health classes, art classes. Now in the summer, I'm doing different programming with their director, Toby Eugenio. I've been able to just interact with them one on one and also just see, like, the behind the scenes of running a school.”

Ava Faria is back on screen being interviewed in a classroom, she says, "It's really kind of nostalgic to come back and see some teachers that I have, see the classroom, see how everything has changed."

Students are walking around in the vibrant exterior of the school while a teacher gives some of them instructions. Ava continues talking, “But it is also really empowering and encouraging to see how much they've been able to change, especially since they rely fully on donations. So to see what they've been able to do in just a few years that I've been gone. It's made me really excited for the future.”

The tone of the video shifts with some upbeat music beginning to play. Ava and a student are walking into a greenhouse. Ava says," So these are some good looking plants that are growing. They look pretty healthy and really watered. And these are some pots, they're different sizes. We have some options.” Ava and the student are having quality bonding time.

The audio from the greenhouse fades out.

Video opens back up with several images. First, Ava in an art supply room showing a student something on a computer, then Ava in a greenhouse showing a student a plant. While all this is going on Ava says, “from this internship. I think that I've been able to enhance a lot of the skills I already have. Part of that is just communication, communicating with the team, communicating with families, with students, and also really building a relationship. When you're working with students who come from low income backgrounds. There's a lot more baggage than just like an economic barrier. A lot of times it's just a lot of other traumas that you have to learn to address, which I think is really important moving forward in public health and public policy is really looking at education and making it accessible to everyone.”

Ava is back on screen in a classroom being interviewed. She says, “I’m really thankful to Brandeis for funding this opportunity, and I've really enjoyed being able to give back to my community. And this is one of the aspects of Brandeis that really caught my attention when applying to actually apply like early decision to Brandeis.”

Images are displayed of Ava interacting with the students. There is a blurry shot that slowly focuses on a rock that says "connect." Ava continues, “because I was able to see how much they're willing to invest in their students. It's a really special opportunity that a lot of the schools my friends attend don't have. So, I just think that their support is just really unique.”

The Brandeis University logo slowly fades in then out after a few seconds.

The credits slowly fade in.
