Fade in
You see a sign saying "Brandeis University" with flowers in front of it.
You hear Professor Tim Hickey saying,"I think a lot of our Brandeis students want to make a difference in the world, and they're very kind of keenly interested in social justice. And with computer science, you can do that. You can build apps that influence the world in positive ways, and our students jump at those opportunities."
As he is speaking you see visuals of students in a classroom observing Professor Hickey while he teaches.
Professor Hickey continues,"The techniques of computer science are turning out to be fundamental in all kinds of different areas. So computer science is really critical field for the future, for our society, for all the disciplines, for science, and just for itself too. It's a really exciting field to get into."
Jimkelly Percine, a computer science student at Brandeis, says,"In deciding computer science as my major. I feel like, you know, the community aspect of computer sciences is something that I like and that you're never alone and people are always willing to help you succeed in the major."
You see students in a classroom taking notes down and some students smiling at the camera.
Jimkelly continues,"That means the professors, the staff can really tailor to your learning experience. You're not just a number at Brandeis. I feel you're part of the family, the community."
You see students talking to each other and then some students in a classroom taking notes.
Professor Hickey says,"Computer science is really an important field. So from a theoretical point of view, it's interesting just to see what can computers do, What are, what's the limits of computation. But from a practical point of view, it's even more important. In our department we have specialties in computation linguistics. So the people that are behind Siri and Alexa and all of those things, and in machine learning, we've got the machine learning group and we have a systems group doing databases and data science and we have entrepreneurship and software development. So those are our main focus areas and it's exciting. We get fantastic students, they come in, they take the courses, but they also do interesting projects outside. They get involved in in startups or in competitions or in hackathons. It's really great to work with them and I enjoy it."
Jimkelly says,"I feel like Tim Hickey opened my horizons to just not just sitting behind a desk and coding, but being creative as well. And that goes for all the professors. They really open your eyes to new paths like machine learning, or if you want to take another elective with computer vision or cybersecurity. It's not just one path. Computer science can go hand in hand with basically anything that you want to do in life, any major that you think that computer science is not really meant for. I feel like it's such an important skill in today's world."
You see Jimkelly taking notes and a student smiling while looking at her computer.
Professor Hickey says,"It's an amazing time to be in computer science. Everything is changing really rapidly. We have these huge advances in machine learning that are just completely changing the way people do research, do business, raising interesting ethical and social concerns. And the technology just gets easier and easier to use. There's a huge demand and a growing demand for people with computer science skills. And so they're getting hired and getting hired at high salaries. Computer science really is a career for just about anybody. There is a huge demand for people with computer science skills. It's growing and we do need those people. So it's something everyone should consider."
"Brandeis University" fades in and then the video fades out.
