A Day in the Life: Preparing for The Laramie Project

Time: 00:02:18

Woman dressed in a plaid jacket with white cabinets behind her speaks to the camera. In the bottom left of screen, an Instagram icon with @CreateatBrandeis written text to it appears.

“Hi Create at Brandeis! My name is Casey Schryer and today I’m gonna be telling you a little bit about Brandeis’ upcoming production of “The Laramie Project.”

Title slide with aerial view of a college campus appears. Text says “A Day in the Life at Brandeis University” with stars that pop out to the sound of twinkling.

Casey appears on screen again in same location and speaks to the camera.

“I am a double major in anthropology and theater arts with a minor in classical studies and in all 5 semester that I have been a student at Brandeis, I have been involved in some with a department production and I can honestly say that this is the most unique.”

Screen cuts to a sped up version of Casey in the same location packing up clothing and props. Some clothes hang off the back of a closet and others in a bag on the floor. A voiceover says, “So right now because we finished recording the show last week I have to pack up all of the costumes and props that they've sent me.”

Hyperlapse cuts to Casey standing up and pointing at hanging pair of brown pants saying, “These are my favorite pants I have ever had in anything that I’ve ever been involved with and I am so bummed that I have to send them back.”

Hyperlapse of packing and voiceover resumes, “ I think I had at least six characters. They had to not only have six costumes for these characters but also so many backups.”

Shot cuts to Casey sitting on her knees next to a brown packing box with a cat sitting on top. She says to the cat, “This feels like I'm doing all the work and you're not really doing any of it.” The cat sneezes. Casey says, “Ew.”

Shot transitions to Casey sitting at her desk with her bed, bookcase, and pink wall behind her. She speaks to camer, “So I’m sitting in my room at my desk right now which is where I sit for most of the show. A lot of us had days where we were coming straight from class to rehearsal. It was important for me to develop a kind of routine that would help me drop in quickly and switch from class time to rehearsal time. so sitting down at this desk and having my physical copy of the script was a good way to ground myself,” she holds up marked up piles of scripts before continuing, “and be ready to work. Usually the first five to ten minutes of rehearsal, we would talk and Adele would make announcements and check in with us and David would crack jokes and also make announcements and just just chat. David told us one story. He had directed a high school production of The Laramie Project back when it first came out and there was some line about knocking bishops and the kid that had that line in his high school show just like thought it was so funny and it became like a thing within their cast and then David told us that story and every time Alaysia says that line I just chuckle to myself a little bit because it sounds so funny.”

Casey stands in front of white door and speaks to camera, “Thanks for hanging out with me today while I packed up stuff and talked about Laramie Project. I hope you learned something cool about our production and hopefully I will see you there! That was so lame.”
