Residencies for GSAS Programs
Master’s and Post Baccalaureate Student Residencies
Resident Students
A master’s student enrolled in either a full or part-time program. Students enrolled in full-time master’s programs have a one to two-year residency requirement based on the program's course of study. Students enrolled in a part-time master’s program (less than 12 credits per semester) do not have a residency requirement. Full-time and part-time students are eligible for academic services and university facilities, including University health insurance, borrowing privileges in the library, a computer account, use of gym facilities, and purchase of a parking sticker. Full time, and some part-time, students may be eligible to apply for loans and in-school loan deferments.
Extended Master’s Students
A master’s student who a) has completed residence requirements and b) needs to utilize the full range of academic services and university facilities while completing degree requirements. Extended master’s students should register for the appropriate courses required to complete their program. Typically, Extended Master’s students should register for CONT 200A in addition to their other course registrations. Extended Master’s students may be eligible to apply for loans and in-school loan deferments. In most cases, students cannot exceed two semesters as Extended Master’s. Summer term registration does not count towards the two semester limit.
PhD Student Residencies
Resident Students
A PhD student enrolled in either a full or part-time program. The residence requirement for PhD students is three years in a full-time program for each year, at the full tuition rate, or the equivalent thereof in part-time study. A part-time student is enrolled in less than 12 credits per semester. Full-time and part-time students are eligible for academic services and university facilities, including University health insurance, borrowing privileges in the library, a computer account, use of gym facilities, and purchase of a parking sticker. Full-time, and some part-time, students may be eligible to apply for loans and in-school loan deferments.
Post-Resident Students
A PhD student who has completed residence requirements. A student in this category is full-time and is eligible for the full range of academic services and university facilities. Post-resident students may be eligible to apply for loans and in school loan deferments.
