Financing your Education

Hornstein students are eligible for a variety of scholarships, fellowships and aid. More than 90% of students admitted to our in-person dual-degree programs receive scholarship awards. Online certificate students will also have access to scholarships and payment plans.

Scholarships for in-person students

Every student accepted in Hornstein's on-campus programs is considered for scholarships that cover all or part of tuition. Below is a comprehensive list of scholarship options. To be considered for these or any additional scholarships, please include your proposal of eligibility in your application's statement of purpose. No additional application procedures are necessary to apply for these funds.

Hornstein's award allocation process starts January 15 of each year, beginning with early applicants.

Scholarships for students in dual-degree programs

For students in the MA/MBA program:

The Melvin S. and Ryna G. Cohen Endowed Fellowship supports graduate student scholarship in the MA/MBA track of studies. Two fellowships are available each year.

For students in the MA/MPP program:

The Nathan Perlmutter Fellowship in Public Policy supports graduate student scholarship in the MA/MPP track. Two fellowships are available each year.

For students in the MA/MA program:

The Frances and Max Elkon Endowed Fellowship supports graduate student scholarship in the MA/MA track. Preference given to students pursuing modern Jewish studies. One fellowship is available each year.
The Bernard Reisman Endowed Diaspora Studies Fellowship supports graduate student scholarship in the MA/MA track. Preference is given to students interesting in studying Jewish culture in the Diaspora. One fellowship is available each year.
The Leonard Sperry Endowed Fellowship supports graduate student scholarship. Preference is given to students following the MA/MA Hornstein/NEJS track of study. One fellowship is available each year.

Scholarships for graduate students (no restrictions)

Sidney Fleck Memorial Fellowship supports graduate student scholarship. One fellowship is available each year.
Sophia and Meyer Goldstein Endowed Fellowship supports graduate student scholarship. One fellowship is available each year.
Morris and Rose D. Greenwald Endowed Fellowship supports graduate student scholarship. One fellowship is available each year.
Michael and May Safran Endowed Fellowship supports graduate student scholarship. One fellowship is available each year.
Arthur F. Silbert Endowed Fellowship supports graduate student scholarship. One fellowship is available each year.
Benjamin S. Hornstein Jewish Communal Service Fellowship supports graduate student scholarship. One fellowship is available each year.

Regional scholarships

For Boston residents:

Ezra J. and Rita H. Denerstein Endowed Fellowship supports graduate student scholarship at the Hornstein Program. Preference is given to students with entrepreneurial ambitions, or who hail from Boston. One fellowship is available each year.

For mid-Atlantic residents:

The Samuel and Frances Hirshenhorn Endowed Fellowship supports graduate student scholarship. Preference is given to students with Polish roots or who are native to the Mid-Atlantic States. Two fellowships available each year.

For Midwestern residents:

The Davidson, Hermelin, Zlotoff Endowed Fellowship supports graduate student scholarship. Preference is given to students who hail from the Midwest. One fellowship is available each year.

For residents of Cleveland, Ohio:

The Max and Betty Ratner Endowed Fellowship supports graduate student scholarship. Preference is given to students who hail from or will be working in Cleveland, OH. One fellowship is available each year.

For residents of St. Louis or Detroit:

The Anna and Meyer Prentis Endowed Fellowship supports graduate student scholarship. Preference is given to students from St. Louis, MO or Detroit, MI. One fellowship is available each year.

External Fellowship Programs

In addition to Hornstein fellowships, all applicants are strongly encouraged to apply for external scholarship programs such as those listed below. Along with providing funds that can be used to supplement Hornstein awards, many of these scholarships provide significant training and mentoring opportunities for their award winners. Please carefully note the application deadlines for each funder.

Paul & Daisy Soros Fellowships for New Americans — Deadline: Usually Nov. 1 of each year

JCC Association Graduate Education Scholarship Program (for full-time JCCA employees) — Deadline: Usually June 1 and Oct. 1 of each year
AffordableCollegesOnline.org lists many scholarship opportunities that might be applicable to your circumstances.

Local Community Aid

Many Jewish communities in North America offer competitive, need-based aid, and/or interest-free loans to students pursuing graduate degrees. Below is a list of some of these scholarship and loan programs; students are encouraged to research their own home communities for others. Applications should be submitted directly to the awarding organization.

Central Scholarship and Loan Referral Service offers $500-$3,000 need-based scholarships to Western Pennsylvania residents.
Jewish Educational Loan Fund (JELF) provides interest-free, need-based "last dollar" loans to Jewish students from Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia.
Jewish Family Service Association offers need-based grants and loans of up to $4,000/year to Jewish residents in Greater Cleveland.
Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Chicago provides scholarship support for students from the Cook County, Chicago metropolitan area and Northwest Indiana.
Jewish Vocational Service Agency of Los Angeles offers need-based scholarships of $2,000-$5,000/year to Jewish residents of Los Angeles County.
JVS Scholarship Loan Program offers interest free, need-based loans up to $5,000/year to Jewish residents of Metro-West New Jersey.
