Ceremony to celebrate service, social justice
Medals will be awarded to students with greatest hours served
The Department of Community Service will host the fourth annual Celebration of Service and Commitment to Service Award Ceremony on Monday, April 29, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in Sherman Function Hall.
Senior Vice President for Students and Enrollment Andrew Flagel will give the opening remarks at the event. The community-wide celebration of Brandeis’ dedication to service and social justice will be attended by about 12 community partners like Greater Waltham ARC, Healthy Waltham, Charles River Public Internet Center among many others.
“The Celebration of Service is an event that only happens at the end of the academic school year to celebrate our local community partners with the Greater Waltham area,” says Lucas Malo, director of the Department of Community Service. “This includes our dedicated student volunteers, faculty and staff who support student engagement, and our local community partners who make the time in their schedule to host and support students’ development as we mutually learn met and unmet needs in the community.”
A new addition to this year’s ceremony will be the Commitment to Service Award Presentation of Medal Winners, an opportunity to celebrate students who have recorded more than 300 hours of service. These medals can also be worn during graduation. Three hundred hours earn a bronze medal, 600 a silver, and 900 a gold. For more information, visit the community service page.
The evening will feature appetizers, beverages, a photo booth, live music by Spellbound, a hands-on community service project, slideshows, fundraisers and student speaker Kapri Kreps ’13.
Waltham Group Outreach Coordinator Sarah Johnson ’13 says, “I think that the event is a great way to get people from all different aspects of service together in one room to celebrate and honor all that the Brandeis community has dedicated to service throughout the year.”
Semi-formal dress is required. Please click here to RSVP. Kosher and vegetarian options are available.
This event is cosponsored by the Department of Community Service, Waltham Group, Office of Experiential Learning, Aramark, the Intercultural Center, Hillel, Spellbound, the Interfaith Chaplaincy and many local Waltham restaurants.
