Brandeis University Names Stewart Uretsky Executive Vice President for Finance and Administration
Uretsky has led finance and operational functions at the Brookings Institution and Harvard Kennedy School
Waltham, Mass., Aug. 12, 2016 - Brandeis University has named Stewart Uretsky, a financial executive with deep experience at academic institutions, as executive vice president for finance and administration. In this key role, Uretsky will provide leadership for Brandeis’ financial, administrative and operational functions. He will join Brandeis on September 6.
Uretsky comes to Brandeis from the Brookings Institution, where he was vice president, chief financial officer and treasurer. “Stew brings a powerful combination of financial acumen and operational expertise to Brandeis,” said Brandeis President Ron Liebowitz. “His skills and experience will be vital as we work together to address the varied challenges within higher education.”
Prior to Brookings, Uretsky was chief financial and administrative officer at Conservation International in Washington, a conservation organization with a presence in 29 countries. Starting in 1999, he spent 10 years in finance and operations roles at Harvard University, first at the Harvard Institute for International Development, and then at the John F. Kennedy School of Government, where he served as chief administrative and financial officer. He received his bachelor’s degree in economics and management from New York University and his master’s in international economics and international relations from Johns Hopkins University.
“I am eager to take on this important role at Brandeis, a relatively young institution with a tremendous legacy and reputation for academic excellence,” Uretsky said. “I look forward to working with Brandeis’ impressive faculty and staff to support the educational mission of the university.”
As executive vice president, Uretsky will oversee a wide variety of areas including finance and accounting, audit, capital structure planning, cash and debt management, human resources, public safety, facilities and real estate, dining, information technology and procurement.
Larry Kanarek ’76, chairman of the board of trustees, said, “Adding Stew to our already powerful leadership team of Ron and (Provost) Lisa Lynch puts our great university in a position to continue our pursuit of excellence and distinction.”
Lynch served as chair of the search committee. “The search committee was extremely impressed with Stew’s quantitative and analytic skills, and by his personal warmth and demonstrated ability to bring people together. We had an excellent search committee composed of faculty, staff and trustees and I thank each of them for their efforts,” she said.
Executive search firm Spencer Stuart served as consultant to the search committee. Uretsky succeeds Steven S. Manos, former senior vice president and chief operating officer of Brandeis.
“On behalf of the entire Brandeis community, I would like to thank Steve for his steady leadership of our financial and administrative functions, and wish him well in retirement,” Liebowitz said.
