Phi Beta Kappa selects 92 new Brandeis members
The Brandeis University chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the oldest and most prestigious undergraduate honor society in the country, has announced the election of 92 new members.
“It is always a privilege for our chapter to honor the new inductees,” said Alice Kelikian, associate professor of history and president of the Brandeis Phi Beta Kappa Chapter. “They represent distinction in coursework not only in their fields of concentration but also personify academic diversity in the liberal arts and sciences.”
Founded at the College of William and Mary in 1776, Phi Beta Kappa’s standards of excellence have made it one of the highest academic honors for college undergraduates. Selection for membership is based on the quality of the candidates’ academic record, the breadth of their scholarly interests beyond their concentration, and the judgments of the faculty and senior administrators concerning the intellectual achievements and character of the students.
It took only 13 years from the university's founding in 1948 for Brandeis to be admitted into the Phi Beta Kappa community.
Of the new members, 84 come from the class of 2018 and 8 come from the class of 2019. The new members will be recognized in a ceremony May 12 at 1:30 p.m. at Spingold Theater.
