Face to Face: Portraits of Self and Other

Upcoming October 2, 2024 - December 29, 2024
Mildred S. Lee Gallery

Face to Face: Portraits of Self and Other presents a stunning array of photographic portraits primarily drawn from the museum’s permanent collection. The exhibition highlights the versatility of portraiture, the photographic image, and its evolution since the turn of the 19th century. Comprised of images of single individuals, paired figures, and monumental triptychs by a group of multi-generational artists from across the globe, the exhibition explores the artist’s role in capturing personal and collective identities while igniting questions about intersectional identities and the evolving nature of the photographic medium.

Face to Face: Portraits of Self and Other is curated by Dr. Gannit Ankori, Henry and Lois Foster Director and Chief Curator of the Rose Art Museum and Professor of Fine Arts and Women’s, Gender and Sexuality at Brandeis University.
