Student Fellow Wins Cool Award

June 12, 2008

Aaron Voldman '09, a 2008 Ethics Center Student Fellow, was honored as a "peace pioneer" by Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream, which gave $10,000 to the organization he serves as executive director, Student Peace Alliance, and to mark the occasion launched a new flavor of ice cream called Imagine Whirled Peace. He recently attended the kick-off in New York City of the new flavor, which features chocolate peace signs.

Voldman founded the Student Peace Alliance in 2006 with Brandeis classmate Julia Simon-Mishel. The organization, now active on 100 campuses, is the student component of the Peace Alliance, which seeks to establish a U.S. Department of Peace. “The recognition of the need for a Peace Department, by a major company like Ben & Jerry's, is really thrilling,” he told the Burlington (Vermont) Free Press, his hometown newspaper. “And the financial support is going to be major for us.”

As part of his Ethics Center Student Fellowship, he is interning this summer with the Asian Study Center for Political and Conflict Transformation in Nepal. For more info on Voldman and the other 2008 ECSFs, click here.
