Echavarría files civil rights lawsuit

Compensation claim pending in Massachusetts

Posted June 15, 2016

Angel Echavarría’s lawyers filed a federal civil rights lawsuit on his behalf today against the city of Lynn, Lynn police officers and Massachusetts State police officers who investigated his case. The lawsuit alleges that police withheld information about a viable alternate suspect in the murder Echavarría was accused of committing, fabricated eyewitness evidence to bolster the case against him, and ignored evidence of his innocence. The claim did not specify the amount of damages sought.
Echavarría has also filed a claim for compensation from the state of Massachusetts. He declined to discuss the claim while it is still pending.

Under Massachusetts law, a person who was wrongfully convicted in the state may be eligible to receive up to $500,000 in damages.
