A Very Fine 100 Years

Brandeis Archives and Special Collections

To mark the centennial of the birth of Irving Fine (1914-62), concerts celebrating the composer are sounding a crescendo across the U.S. In March, a Brandeis tribute featured faculty member Daniel Stepner on violin and Sally Pinkas ’79, PhD’91, on piano. Another on-campus tribute is in the works for November. In the photo shown here, Fine conducts a class in 1950, the year he joined Brandeis as a lecturer and composer-in-residence. He later founded the university’s School of Creative Arts, which he guided until his death from a heart attack at 47.
