Eric A.E. Garber, PhD’83, of Fargo, North Dakota, on March 24. An analytical scientist at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition, he developed methods — still regularly used — to detect toxins and undeclared allergens in foods. Survived by wife Lynn Rust.

Virginia Newes, PhD’87, of Boston, on May 18. A specialist in medieval music and a reviewer for the Boston Musical Intelligencer, she had a passion for classical music of all periods, and taught music history and musicology at the New England Conservatory of Music, Boston University and the Eastman School of Music, from which she retired as an associate professor. Survived by three children and two grandchildren.

Susan (Lawrence) Monack, MMH’88, of Mashpee, Massachusetts, on Jan. 25. Remembered for the care she showed others as a human-services professional at the Visiting Nurses Association and the state’s Department of Elder Affairs, she sang with the Dedham Choral Society and was active in First Parish Milton, a Unitarian Universalist congregation. Survived by husband Donald, a daughter and three grandchildren.
