Director of Academic Programs and Assessment


Position Purpose:

The Director of Academic Programs and Assessment provides leadership for academic programming in the Rabb School Graduate Professional Studies (GPS) and drives its multi-layered assessment processes. The individual in this role has overall responsibility for the academic program quality of the division’s online master’s degrees, professional advisory board relationships and activities, and quality assessment at the course, instructor, and program levels.

Essential Functions:

  • Lead the exploration of areas in which GPS needs research to drive decisions on future endeavors including new academic programming and growth opportunities; provides input and coordination of catalog and schedule changes within and across programs.
  • Direct all aspects of the professional advisory board relationships including bi-annual meetings, member relations, external assessment processes, and program enhancements stemming from advisory recommendations.
  • Serve as a key member of the outreach team (academic representative) for Rabb GPS graduate programs in relevant milieus on campus, with external academic partners, and with potential corporate partners.
  • Direct all aspects of internal and external assessments at the course-, instructor-, and program-levels to assure the quality of learning experience.
  • Provide direction to part-time academic program chairs, participate in divisional and program-level faculty meetings and webinars, and serve on the admissions committee for all graduate programs.
  • Teach a minimum of one, and up to three courses, per year, in an appropriate subject.  

Position Requirements:

  • Minimum of seven years’ experience in academic leadership.
  • Ph.D. in a liberal arts field.
  • Advanced knowledge of concepts and practices of pedagogy and online education as well as pedagogical needs of adult learners.
  • University teaching experience in online contexts.
  • Skilled with assessment of learning outcomes.
  • Superior written and oral communication skills; superlative interpersonal and organizational skills; excellent presentation skills; strong customer service orientation; effective project management skills.
  • Ability to balance multiple simultaneous projects; solve problems quickly and completely; convey complex technical information to non-technical users; work well independently; and contribute strongly as part of a team.

Dimensions:

  • Drive instructor- and course-level assessment reviews among 80+ adjunct instructors and 100+ courses.
  • Drive internal and external program assessment reviews among 7+ master’s programs, five academic program chairs, and 50+ professional advisory board members.
  • Meet regularly with the Executive Director and the other directors in setting Division plans and goals.
  • Meet regularly with the five academic program chairs and work with other team members to set the academic vision for the GPS Division.
  • Meet as required with the Vice Provost and other academic leaders on campus, who are external to the Division.

Decision Making: This position provides direct leadership for the academic endeavors of the Division.  This includes but is not limited to:

  • Ownership of all professional advisory board relationships and related processes.
  • Choices and direction for assessment processes and related reporting.
  • Visioning of new academic degree programming and updates to existing programs.
  • Collaborate on decisions regarding the hiring, assessment and dismissal of instructors; selection and oversight of part time academic program directors.
  • Guidance as to data collection and analysis aimed at support for decision-making.
  • Provide the representative voice for outcomes/assessment on the Brandeis campus.

Additional Information:

Availability for occasional evening meetings is required.  The position requires excellent leadership and analytic skills, knowledge of distance learning and related technology needs and awareness of academic assessment methods and tools.
