Director of Online Learning


Position Purpose:

The Director of Online Learning has overall responsibility for leading the distance learning infrastructure in the Rabb School Graduate Professional Studies (GPS) including standards, tools, and pedagogical training of faculty and students. The individual in this role oversees qualitative and quantitative standards to be applied in online programming, and drives initiatives for faculty training and development, to assure continuous improvement and application of online learning best practices.

Essential Functions:

  • Direct all aspects of the distance learning infrastructure for Rabb GPS including online teaching standards and best practices, learning management system use and adaptations in support of online learning best practices, and web conferencing tool use to supplement asynchronous learning.
  • Identify, design, and create incremental improvements to faculty and student training courses and related resources; teach these courses as needed.
  • Create and lead faculty development workshops in support of course and program quality, continuous improvement, and application of best practices.
  • Provide technology direction and support to part-time academic program chairs and faculty, participates in divisional and program-level faculty meetings and webinars, and coordinates guest speaker events.
  • Represent GPS in relevant milieus on campus providing input to initiatives related to online teaching and learning, and serve as a member of related University committees which provide input and direction regarding academic technology, the learning management system, and online learning.
  • Teach a minimum of one, and up to three courses, per year, in an appropriate subject.

Position Requirements:

  • Minimum of seven years’ experience in online education, preferably in higher education.
  • Advanced degree in instructional technology or a liberal arts field required.  
  • Advanced knowledge of concepts and practices of pedagogy and online education, pedagogical needs of adult learners, and capabilities of learning management systems.
  • University teaching experience in online contexts.
  • Skilled with assessment of learning outcomes.
  • Superior written and oral communication skills; superlative interpersonal and organizational skills; excellent presentation skills; strong customer service orientation; effective project management skills.
  • Ability to balance multiple simultaneous projects; solve problems quickly and completely; convey complex technical information to non-technical users; work well independently; and contribute strongly as part of a team.

Dimensions:

  • Provide pedagogical and technology training and support to 80+ adjunct instructors teaching 100+ courses.
  • Meet regularly with the Executive Director and the other directors in setting Division plans and goals.
  • Meet regularly with the five academic program chairs and work with other team members to set the academic vision for the GPS Division.
  • Meet as required with the Vice Provost and other academic leaders on campus who are external to the Division regarding online education initiatives.

Decision Making: This position provides leadership for the online learning infrastructure of the Division.  This includes but is not limited to:

  • Ownership of online learning standards, training courses and assets, and tool use, adaptation and (when applicable) acquisition.
  • Choices and direction for faculty development opportunities related to pedagogy and technology.
  • Collaborate on decisions regarding the hiring, assessment and dismissal of instructors.
  • Provide a representative voice for distance learning on the Brandeis campus.

Additional Information:

Availability for occasional evening meetings is required.  The position requires excellent leadership and analytic skills, knowledge of distance learning and related technology needs and awareness of academic assessment methods and tools.
