‘To Keep Our University in the Forefront’

During his years as Brandeis president, Abram L. Sachar, H’68, wrote or dictated thousands of letters to donors, fellow academics, and friends. This missive to Rabbi Ferdinand Isserman in St. Louis is classic Sachar: witty, simultaneously self-assured and self-deprecating, and affectionate. Written in 1968, as Sachar was saying goodbye to the presidency and becoming chancellor, it reveals and revels in his enormous ambitions for the institution he helped found.
