Cybersecurity Alert: Stay Safe This Semester

With a new academic term beginning, social engineering scams targeting students, faculty and staff are rising. Cyber attackers are attempting to redirect payroll deposits, steal financial aid details, and capture personal data via fake job offers, phishing emails, and QR codes. Send any suspicious messages or link to phishing@brandeis.edu. Let's protect our community by staying alert, verifying before we click and remember some cybersecurity best practices:

  • Treat "bonus" or "salary increase" email as suspicious. Always verify the sender before clicking links.
  • Approve multi-factor authentication pushes, such as Duo, only if you initiated them. Deny unexpected prompts.
  • Update your operating system and apps and use reputable anti-virus software.
  • Use a VPN on public wi-fi.
  • Check financial aid only through official portals (FAFSA, loan services, university-affiliated sites).
  • Ignore unsolicited job emails or texts. Use official job boards and campus career services.
  • Inspect QR codes. Once scanned, verify the URL before entering any information. Do not trust QR codes sent by email or text from unknown sources.

If you have any questions or need assistance, please contact the ITS Security Group (security@brandeis.edu).

ESPECIALLY FOR STUDENTS
Fall 2025 Bills Past Due

Fall 2025 bills were released to students and families via the Nelnet Student Account Portal in early July. Bills were due on August 8, 2025. Registration holds have been placed on past due accounts and late fees have been applied. Unpaid balances may result in withdrawal from the University.

Students can access their billing details by clicking the Nelnet Student Account Portal link found within the Student Account worklet in Workday. Students who have never accessed the Nelnet Student Account Portal before will need to set up their student profile (refer to the Nelnet - Account Access job aid for detailed instructions) before they can view the bill.

In order for parents, guardians, sponsors, or another party to receive the student's tuition bill, view the student account, and make payments, the student must add them as Authorized Parties in Nelnet. Once they are set up as an Authorized Party, parents/guardians can access Nelnet directly with their own usernames and passwords; they cannot use the student's log-in credentials to access the portal.

Review your e-bill and the Transaction Details in Nelnet. The Fall 2025 e-bill (PDF) is only a snapshot in time; any subsequent charges, financial aid and/or payments will only be reflected in the Transaction Details in Nelnet. If you have questions about the balance, or payment options, contact Brandeis Student Financial Services at sfs@brandeis.edu or 781-736-3700.

PUBLIC SAFETY & SECURITY
REMINDER: Brandeis Safe App – New Walk Features Now Live

The Brandeis Safe App continues to evolve with new updates designed to make it even easier to stay safe on campus. We are excited to share improvements to the Virtual Walk and Friend Walk features:

  • Virtual Walk with Public Safety – You can now request Public Safety to actively monitor your walk across campus in real time. If you don’t arrive as expected, officers will be immediately notified.
  • Friend Walk – Updates make it simpler to share your location with a friend or family member and automatically notify them when you’ve reached your destination safely.

These updates strengthen the app’s ability to provide peace of mind, whether you’re heading back to your residence, crossing campus late at night, or simply want an added layer of safety.

The Brandeis Safe App also continues to offer:

  • A mobile “blue light” for emergency contact with Public Safety.
  • Instant safety alerts and updates.
  • Quick access to emergency resources and procedures.

If you have not yet downloaded Brandeis Safe, it is available in the App Store (iOS) and Google Play Store (Android). For questions, please see the Public Safety website: Brandeis Safe or contact the Technology Help Desk at help@brandeis.edu or 781-736-HELP.
