“My job comes down to a single thing — to keep Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon,” veteran nuclear-arms negotiator Gary Samore once told a New York Times reporter.

Before joining the Crown Center for Middle East Studies as the Crown Family Director in July, Samore spent decades leading U.S. efforts to negotiate nuclear nonproliferation agreements with North Korea, Russia and Iran.

The ultimate pragmatist, he knew when to be a hard-liner, offer flattery or even go out for a corned-beef sandwich with an archenemy.
