The Brandeis University chapter of Phi Beta Kappa has announced the election of a total of 99 new members from the classes of 2017 and 2018.

"We're very proud to welcome these newest members to Phi Beta Kappa," said Alice Kelikian, associate professor of history and president of the Brandeis Phi Beta Kappa Chapter. "They exemplify not only academic distinction, but also a willingness to venture outside their respective fields of study and a desire to expand their understandings of the world."

Phi Beta Kappa is the oldest and most prestigious undergraduate honors society in the United States. Founded at the College of William and Mary in 1776, its standards of excellence have made it one of the highest academic honors for college undergraduates.

Selection for membership in Phi Beta Kappa is based on the quality of the candidates’ academic record, the breadth of their scholarly interests beyond their concentration, and the judgments of the faculty and senior administrators concerning the intellectual achievements and character of the students.

Of the new members, 91 come from the class of 2017 and 8 come from the class of 2018. They will be recognized in a ceremony on May 20 at 1:30 in Spingold Theater Center.
