Brandeis University has named Sarah Berg the director of Sexual Assault Services and Prevention.

Berg will oversee the Office of Prevention Services and the Rape Crisis Center and coordinate advocacy services for survivors of sexual assault, relationship violence and stalking. Berg will also conduct outreach and education to promote a healthy campus environment, and serve as a liaison to student organizations.

She will start on Jan. 15.

“I’m looking forward to working one-on-one with students,” said Berg. “I am impressed with the current program at Brandeis. It has strong student leadership and is so robust. I’ve gotten vibes that Brandeis, in general, has a great deal of engagement from its students. I’m just so excited to get to contribute.”

Berg joins the Brandeis community after having served as the Deputy Title IX Director of Prevention, Training and Outreach at the University of Colorado at Denver since July 2016. In that role, Berg designed, implemented and evaluated prevention education around discrimination, harassment and sexual misconduct for the campus community.

Berg also chaired a “Diversity and Equity Module” planning team to collaboratively design, test and implement an online training tool on topics like university policies, implicit bias and bystander intervention for all campus community members.

In addition, Berg was the director of the Phoenix Center at Auraria, a 24-hour facility that offers victim services and violence prevention education, from January 2015 to July 2016.

One of Berg’s goals when she arrives at Brandeis is to get to know the campus and lead a messaging and branding effort for the Rape Crisis Center and the Office of Prevention Services.

“From what I’ve heard, there are some students who are hesitant to reach out to the office, so right away I want to learn all I can about the campus and figure out appropriate language to use so that everyone understands our resources are open to all,” Berg said.

Berg is a certified Title IX administrator. She received her BA in communications magna cum laude from Boston University in 2011 and earned her master’s degree in women and gender studies from the University of Colorado at Denver.

“I am thrilled to welcome Sarah to our staff and know that she has the potential to make significant contributions to our sexual violence prevention and advocacy work,” said Brandeis Vice President of Student Affairs Sheryl Sousa ’90. “Please join me in welcoming Sarah to the Brandeis community.”
