University Professor Eve Marder, Nobel Laureate Drew Weissman Drew Weissman’81, GSAS MA’81, P’15, H’23 elected to American Philosophical Society

Two members of the Brandeis scientific community have been elected into membership by the American Philosophical Society.
University Professor Eve Marder ’69 and immunologist Drew Weissman ’81, GSAS MA’81, P’15, H’23 are two of six elected as part of the biological sciences class.
Marder is the Victor and Gwendolyn Beinfield Professor of Neuroscience. Weissman, a 2021 winner of the Brandeis Alumni Achievement Award, also received the 2023 Nobel Prize in Medicine for research that led to the development of the COVID-19 vaccine.
In addition, Columbia Law School professor Setla Benhabib ’72 and New York University School of Law Professor Bryan Stevenson, H’21, were elected as part of this year’s social sciences class. Election to the American Philosophical Society honors extraordinary accomplishments across academic disciplines.
Founded in 1743 by Benjamin Franklin, the American Philosophical Society is the oldest learned society in the U.S. Early members included George Washington, John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, Alexander Hamilton, and John Marshall. Today the Society has 976 elected members, 818 resident members and 158 international members from more than two dozen foreign countries.
