How do Asian art and artifacts support the idea of tradition against the backdrop of modernization? By investigating traditionalist expressions in different spheres of visual culture (e.g. folk art, ceramics, architecture, and painting), this seminar seeks to explore the ways in which inherited practices continue to assert themselves in modern life. In the process, the class also looks at Western perceptions of ?the East? and Asian responses to these perceptions. While Japan is the primary object of study, transcultural interactions with other countries with reference to colonialism and artists? personal encounters will be explored. The seminar highlights art as a vital vehicle for culture and identity formation. |
