Fencers are UAA Athletes of Week

A trio of Brandeis University fencers have been selected as University Athletic Association Athletes of the Week for Nov. 20 on the basis of their performances at the opening Northeast Fencing Conference meet of the season.

Junior foil fencer Vikki Nunley and rookie Adam Mandel were honored for the second time in 2011-12, while sophomore foil Julian Cardillo  was recognized for the first time this season.

Nunley led the Brandeis women to a 4-2 record at the meet by going 16-1 overall. She went 3-0 in wins over Boston University (21-6), New Hampshire (19-8) and Wellesley (15-12) and in a loss to MIT (9-18). Nunley was also 2-0 against Massachusetts (19-8) and 2-1 against Sacred Heart (9-18).

Mandel and Cardillo led the Brandeis men to a 4-1 record at the University of New Hampshire. The Judges defeated Boston U, 26-1, Massachusetts, 23-4, New Hampshire, 20-7 and MIT, 14-13, with a 19-8 loss to Sacred Heart. Mandel posted an 11-0 record; Cardillo was 14-1.

Brandeis is next in action on Saturday, Dec. 4, when the Judges host the first of two home meets of the season, the Brandeis Invitational. The Judges will take on top-level teams from Brown, Cornell, St. John's and Yale beginning at 9 a.m.
