Professor Rakowski's quartet 'Thickly Settled' to premiere

Brandeis Professor David Rakowski’s quartet “Thickly Settled” will receive its world premiere at Boston Musica Viva’s season opening.

Rakowski is the Walter W. Naumburg Professor of Composition.

In “Thickly Settled,” which employs the unusual instrumentation of Messiaen’s “Quartet for the End of Time, thick textures evaporate into simpler musical ideas. Rakowski came up with the work ‘s title while driving through central Massachusetts and coming upon “pockets of civilization” among the thickets.

The performance will be held at 8 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 30, at the Tsai Performance Center at Boston University.

Advance ticket sales are available by visiting www.bmv.org or by calling (617) 354‐6910. General admission is $30; tickets for seniors and WGBH members are $25; student tickets are $10.
