Students offer tips for another COVID semester

On top of navigating all the other parts of college life, the COVID-19 pandemic has brought a whole new set of challenges for students.

How can you thrive in a world that requires remote learning and social distancing? BrandeisNOW asked undergraduates to share pieces of advice for fellow returning students and newly-arriving midyear students who will have to manage university life under similar circumstances this spring.

For dealing with remote classes, I would recommend giving yourself time away from your screen, especially if you have more than one remote class that day. As the semester progressed, I found it more difficult to focus. It is difficult since so much of our daily activities now involve the internet and screens but forcing myself to not look at a screen, even for ten minutes in between classes, was really beneficial and helped reduce Zoom fatigue.

Give yourself a dedicated night or afternoon every week for self-care and relaxation, whether it's just watching movies for six hours on Saturday night so that Sunday you're ready to work, or spending an hour or two relaxing so you'll sleep even better.

Also, take dance breaks while working! It's a great way to move around and enjoy yourself.

Even though COVID-19 forces us to be physically distant from each other, stay connected with friends any way possible. Pay attention to your mental state.

Let yourself be in the moment.  Whoever you're with, give them your full attention and appreciate this special time with them.

When you do get to hang out with a friend, have a night in with your significant other or call a family member. Let that person be your world for a little while. The bigger things can wait.

The pandemic has made socializing in person difficult but using social media outlets to befriend people can be the first step to finding a friend. Another opportunity can be contacting people in your classes and studying together on campus. Also, large parties aren’t as good as having quality fun with your friends.
