Dissertation Completion Timeline
Step 1: Apply to Graduate Before or By the Application Deadline
Submit your online Application for Degree. A doctoral fee of $235.00 must be paid with the submission of this form. Once the doctoral fee charge is on the account, or if any balance is outstanding, use the e-check or credit card option in the Finance section of the Student Center. If the charge is not yet posted or no balance is due, the links for e-payments will not be available in the Student Center, but you can go directly to www.afford.com and pay by e-check or credit card by selecting "Make A Payment," Pay in Full, and searching for Brandeis.
Deadlines: Tuesday, November 1, 2016 for February 2017 graduation; Wednesday, March 1, 2017 for May 2017 graduation); Friday, June 23, 2017 for August 2017 graduation. A new application is necessary if you do not complete all requirements for the degree by the dates listed.
Step 2: Submit Dissertation Examining Committee (DEC) Form Two Weeks before your Defense
Dissertation Examining Committee (DEC) Form: This form states the proposed title of your dissertation, your defense date, time and location, and lists the members of your defense committee. The form must be signed by your program chair and delivered to Meghan Peck, GSAS (Kutz 205) at least two weeks before your defense date. Dean Chasalow will review and sign the form, giving GSAS approval.
Last Day to Defend: Friday, December 9, 2016 for February 2017 completion; Friday, April 07, 2017 for May 2017 completion); Friday, July 28, 2017 for August 2017 completion.
Step 3: Bring Your Dissertation Defense Form and Signature Page to Your Defense
Ph.D. Dissertation Defense Form: Obtained from the Registrar’s website. This form should be signed by your committee at the defense and returned to the Registrar’s Office. If revisions are requested, additional form, the Report on Ph.D. Revisions Form is required. This form must be submitted by the doctoral candidate after the committee has accepted the revised dissertation. Signature Page: for committee members to sign at your defense. Please Note: Signed version of the Signature Page is required by GSAS and should be turned in to GSAS. An unsigned Signature Page should be included in the prefatory pages of the final, ready-for-publication dissertation.
Dissertation Submission Deadlines: Wednesday, January 18, 2017 for February 2017 degree; Thursday, April 27, 2017 for May 2017 degree); Thursday, August 10, 2017 for August 2017 degree.
Step 4: Submit Your Dissertation--Don't wait until the last day!
Electronic Submission: Submit your dissertation to ProQuest/UMI. The Doctoral Dissertation Agreement Form, Title Page, and Abstract are all part of the online submission process.
Publishing Options: ‘TR’ (Traditional Publishing) restrictions and/or embargo on dissertation access is available through TR option; ‘OA’ (Open Access Publishing) no restrictions available to researcher (author must pay additional $95 fee for Open Access). Read more about TR and OA publishing. You can also submit to the BIR, which is OA and free of charge.
Step 5: Complete GSAS Exit Survey and Survey of Earned Doctorates (SED) by Your Dissertation Submission Deadline
GSAS Exit Survey: Completed online; GSAS will send you the link to its Exit Survey once your DEC form is submitted.
Survey of Earned Doctorates (SED): To receive a pin to set up your account, you should fill out this form. Information to complete the survey will then be sent to you.
Dissertation Submission and Semester Registration
If you deposit your dissertation online and it is approved by GSAS...
- Before the first day of class (Degree Pending Status): No fee, registration not required;
Change of Status Form required.
- Between the first day of class and before the registration period ends (Continuation Status): Registration is required and continuation fee will be waived.
- After the registration period: Registration is required and fee must be paid.
