House Hunting Days

July 30-August 2, 2013
What is it?

"House Hunting Days" is an intensive program to assist new graduate students in finding housing and a roommate over the course of four days. Based on past years' experience, we anticipate that you will have a signed lease and a place to stay for the coming academic year by the end of the event.

Where Can I Stay During the Event?

The Office of Residence Life will provide accommodations for about 40 house hunters. Beds, desks, and bathroom facilities will be provided for your stay. However, no cooking facilities and no linen supplies are available. You will be responsible for supplying your own sheets, towels, pillows, etc. Also, due to limited space, we cannot accommodate spouses, companions, or children.

How Will I Find Housing?

The Graduate Student Affairs Office will supply maps of the area, lists of realtors and landlords seeking tenants, local telephone and internet access for conducting your search, directions for how to use public transit, and other information you may need. In past years, over 95% of those who have participated have found the apartment or the roommates they needed. Come prepared with the financial backing to secure an apartment! You will most likely need first month’s rent, last month’s rent, and a security deposit. (i.e. if the apartment is $600 per month, you will need to be able to put down $600 x 3 = $1,800.)  Sometimes landlords are negotiable regarding this amount, but please be prepared for the maximum.

Is Transportation Provided?

Public transportation will be available if you need it, but we recommend that you bring a car if you can (even if you’re not planning on having a car to use during the year). Please be prepared to start and finish your search at this event.

How Do I Register For The Event?

To register, please complete the registration form and mail it, along with a $75.00 non-refundable fee. Since the June 30, 2013 deadline has passed, please check with Robin Mancini to see if registration spots are still available. Registration forms will receive priority based on the order they are received. Only completed forms with the deposit are processed.
