  • Names and e-mail addresses of recommenders.
  • Names of undergraduate and graduate institutions and dates of attendance.
  • GRE, TOEFL, IELTS scores, percentiles and dates taken (if applicable).
  • Personal statement and a curriculum vitae or resumé saved on the computer on which applicant is working (optional).
  • VISA, MasterCard, or Discover for credit card payment of application fee through this online application using the university's secured server.

2. The application fee ($75 for online applications; $100 for paper applications) may be paid by:

  • VISA, MasterCard, or Discover during the online application process.
  • Check or money order, which should be mailed after completing the online application. In this case, exit the browser after the credit card information screen appears, and mail a check in the amount of $75 to the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. The applicant's name must appear on the face of the check. Please note: Your application will be acknowledged and processed only after the check is received.
  • Should you wish to mail a paper application, please download the application. Please be sure to include a check in the amount of $100 to the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences.

3. This application is used by all applicants to the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. You will find some data fields which are not relevant to your program. These fields should be left blank.

4. The second page of the application asks you to list faculty whose research is of interest to you. Programs use this information in different ways:

  1. Applicants to the Ph.D. program in chemistry must list the names of the chemistry faculty with whom they intend to work, and the area of chemistry in which the faculty specialize (organic, inorganic, physical, etc.). Balancing a student's research interests with those of the Brandeis faculty is a major factor in the admissions process. If admitted, the applicant's choice of a research supervisor will be guided by the preferences expressed in this section of your application
  2. Applicants to the Ph.D. programs in biochemistry; biophysics and structural biology; molecular and cell biology; and neuroscience should use this section to list the names of the faculty with whom they wish to meet during a departmental visit. Students in the life sciences do not choose a thesis adviser until after completion of their first year.
  3. Applicants to the Ph.D. programs in the humanities, social sciences, and natural and computational sciences should use this section to list faculty members with whom they may wish to work. For these applicants, this field is optional.
  4. Applicants to the master's and the certificate programs should not complete this field.

5. You will have the opportunity to attach a personal statement and curriculum vitae or resumé to this application. These should be formatted as .doc, .pdf, or .rtf documents. For the most efficient processing, we encourage you to submit these documentes electronically. If you prefer, they may also be mailed to us.

6. The admissions committee prefers to receive letters of recommendation written in support of your application electronically. When completing the application, please include your referees' complete contact information, including e-mail address. We will contact your referees directly with the electronic link for submission of their letter.

For those referees who do not wish to submit their letters electronically, we will accept hard-copy letters of recommendation. The method by which your referees submit their letters has no bearing on your application.

7. Official transcripts from all universities and colleges attended must be submitted to the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences.  For faster processing, please request that your previous institutions mail you official transcripts, which you may then send to us in one package.  They should be unopened and sealed.

8. If your program requires a writing sample, you may mail it to us at the address below or e-mail it directly.

9. Just before you submit your application, you will have the opportunity to review your responses. We recommend that you print a copy of the completed application for your records.  Please do not mail a hard copy of the electronic application to us.
